Crossing the Antarctic Circle

This special, once-per-year voyage includes extra days so we can push deep into rarely visited regions south of the Antarctic Circle. In so doing, we are following in the historic footsteps of legendary polar explorers and early scientific expeditions. The vast, white landscapes here are both bleak and beautiful, the weather is especially wild, and the waters are full of constantly shifting sea ice and enormous tabular icebergs. This is expedition cruising at its most authentic.

Stewart's Take

An iconic expedition with a fantastic ship and the best of Antarctica.

Overview

Achieve what few have done and cross the Antarctic Circle into the zone of 24-hour daylight. During your expedition you explore the majestic Antarctic Peninsula, where you will witness penguins, seals and seabirds with the incredible and spectacular Antarctic backdrop. Landing on the continent itself is a memorable highlight, where you’ll explore the iconic sights that make this one of the world’s most pristine, exotic and unforgettable natural environments.
Day 1. Ushuaia, Argentina. Our program starts in the city of Ushuaia. Enjoy your staying at Arakur hotel resort, part of the “Leading Hotels of the World”. Day 2. Embarkation day in Ushuaia. We embark the Sea Spirit and set sail down the Beagle Channel. Our ship heads south to icebergs and penguins, and even deeper south to the “boundary” of Antarctica – the Polar Circle. Day 3-4. Crossing the Drake Passage. The Drake Passage is named after the famous 16th century English pirate (and explorer) Sir Francis Drake. The passage has picked up an unpredictable character of the pirate; it might be rough sea there. However we hope to make our crossing comfortable with help of the Sea Spirit’s stabilizer fins. We plan to see the first subantarctic land on the second day of our sea passage. Day 5-7. The South Shetlands and Antarctic Continent. As our ship gets to the region of Antarctic Peninsula we make 2 landings a day to have maximum opportunities to explore Antarctica with all our five senses. We plan to visit the most interesting sights: stunning landscapes at Lemaire and Neumayer Channels, fantastic icebergs and glaciers of Pleneau and Paradise Bays, penguin colonies at Cuverville and Petermann Islands, several historic and active scientific stations. Day 8. Crossing the Antarctic Circle. Today we cross 66° 33′ 44″ and will have joined the select group of those who have seen what is up (or down) there. At Crystal Sound we watch impressive high mountains and huge glaciers. We plan to land at Fish Islands to observe the southernmost colony of Adelie penguins in the region of the Antarctic Peninsula. In the evening our ship reverses its course heading back to South America. Day 9-10. Return trip via the South Shetlands and Antarctic Continent. Our return trip goes via Antarctic Peninsula and the South Shetlands. Thus we have excellent opportunities to discover sights we’ve missed on our way south. Day 11-12. Drake Passage. Antarctic birds and whales escort our ship. We believe that now you can identify them all easily. Day 13. Ushuaia, disembarkation. Our voyage finishes at the same port where it had started. What is quite different – that’s you. Now you are the part of the select group of travelers who have been south of the Antarctic Circle.
