Paddling Excursion

A short, guided paddling excursion designed for beginners. Discover polar kayaking safely and comfortably with stable kayaks, expert guides, and unforgettable iceberg scenery.

Discover Kayaking (also known as the Paddling Excursion) is the perfect introduction to paddling in the polar regions. Designed for beginners and casual adventurers, this short, guided kayak experience lets you glide quietly among icebergs, calm bays, and glacial coastlines — all without committing to a full multi-day sea-kayaking program.

It is one of the easiest and most rewarding ways to experience the Arctic or Antarctica from sea level.

???? What Is a Discover Kayaking / Paddling Excursion?

A Discover Kayaking outing is a single-session kayak adventure, normally lasting between one and three hours. It is offered as an optional activity on many Arctic and Antarctic expedition cruises.

Unlike full sea-kayaking programs, this short excursion uses stable, sit-on-top or easy-entry kayaks and is designed specifically for travellers with little or no prior kayaking experience.

Ideal for anyone who wants a gentle, scenic taste of paddling in polar waters.

???? Where & When These Excursions Take Place

Discover Kayaking excursions take place in safe, sheltered locations chosen by expedition guides — such as calm bays, fjords, glacial coves, or areas dotted with brash ice and small icebergs.

Excursions are typically offered:

  • In both the Arctic and Antarctic

  • During morning or afternoon activity slots

  • Only when conditions are calm and safe

  • When winds, visibility, and ice levels allow for a relaxed paddle

Because of the unpredictability of polar weather, excursions may be rescheduled or cancelled if necessary.

???? What to Expect on Your Discover Kayaking Outing

✔️ Equipment Provided

Operators supply all the technical gear, typically including:

  • Stable sit-on-top or inflatable kayaks

  • Drysuit or waterproof outer layer

  • Personal flotation device (PFD)

  • Neoprene or rubber boots

  • Neoprene gloves

  • Waterproof drybag

  • Safety equipment

These kayaks are designed for stability, ease of entry, and comfort, making them perfect for first-time paddlers.

✔️ Guidance & Safety

Your small group is led by an experienced polar guide who:

  • Provides basic instruction and safety orientation

  • Helps you board and exit the kayak

  • Sets an easy pace suited for beginners

  • Supervises your outing with a support Zodiac nearby

✔️ Typical Duration

Most excursions last 1–3 hours, depending on:

  • Weather and sea conditions

  • Wildlife presence

  • The day’s expedition schedule

✔️ Scenery & Highlights

While paddling, you may explore:

  • Calm waterways surrounded by glaciers

  • Iceberg-filled lagoons

  • Rocky shorelines and coastal cliffs

  • Quiet bays full of floating brash ice

Wildlife sightings may include seals on ice, penguins (in Antarctica), seabirds, or distant whale spouts — always at a safe distance.

✔️ Requirements

No prior kayaking experience is required.
However, participants should:

  • Have basic mobility

  • Be comfortable sitting low in a kayak

  • Be able to enter and exit from a Zodiac

  • Have a moderate level of general fitness

???? Who Discover Kayaking Is Best For

Perfect for:

  • Complete beginners with no kayaking experience

  • Travellers who want an easy, low-commitment adventure

  • Guests curious about kayaking but unsure about joining the full program

  • Anyone wanting to see the polar world quietly from water level

  • Photographers seeking unique low-angle shots near ice

Not ideal for:

  • Travellers seeking long-distance, physically demanding paddling

  • Those who prefer fast-paced adventure activities

  • Anyone uncomfortable with basic outdoor activity or cold weather

⭐ Why Choose a Discover Kayaking Excursion?

  • Beginner-friendly — accessible for almost anyone

  • Short and low-commitment — fits easily into the busy itinerary of a polar cruise

  • A unique perspective — see glaciers and icebergs at water level

  • Safe and supported — stable kayaks and expert guides

  • Incredible photos and memories — without needing experience or special skills

  • A taste of adventure — perfect for those curious about paddling but not ready for a full program
