Arctic Svalbard, Greenland... and a solar eclipse - what a combination!
Overview
Join the Arctic Highlights expedition aboard M/S Expedition from Longyearbyen to Reykjavík, a 15-day voyage through remote Arctic wilderness. Sail along Svalbard’s ice edge, explore colossal East Greenland fjords and visit Inuit communities, with Zodiac cruising and shore excursions highlighting wildlife and scenery. On the August 3, 2026 departure, position in Kejser Franz Joseph Fjord to experience a partial or total solar eclipse against the stark Arctic backdrop — a once-in-a-lifetime celestial eventItinerary
Day 1 Longyearbyen Please ensure your flight arrives by 2pm at the latest in order to be on time for In the afternoon, join your fellow passengers to take your group transfer and begin your journey on the Expedition. Please refer to your welcome letter or the joining instructions posted in the lobby of the start hotel. Make sure you have your passport handy as you are about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime. Days 2-5 Svalbard/Greenland Sea Over four full days, explore a small portion of the western coast of Svalbard. Entering the fall the days are getting shorter so try to take advantage of all of the sunlight possible to search for wildlife. Spend these days in search of the elusive polar bears as they hunt seals. Look out for Svalbard's unique subspecies of reindeer. Although much smaller than their southern relatives, they still carry impressive antlers. Keep a sharp lookout for Arctic foxes. By not having a set itinerary, we take on an expedition spirit and are free to take advantage of the best that Svalbard has to offer. Jump into a Zodiac, and head out to explore. Keep an eye out for wildlife. The expert Expedition staff will teach the group about the flora and fauna along the way. This activity depends on weather and ice conditions. Arctic Polar Plunge You remembered to pack your bathing suit, right? Depending on weather conditions, opt to do the polar plunge and jump into the frigid waters of the Arctic. Convince some of your fellow passengers to join and you’ll be left with an amazing group experience no one will ever forget! Days 6-7 Greenland Sea Frigid waters drain from the Arctic Ocean in a southwest current along the coast of Northeast Greenland. Often, drifting pack ice is pushed along the coast. We will attempt to approach and follow the pack ice edge to explore the polar seascape. Keep a lookout for sea mammals like seals and whales and also sea birds such as kittiwakes and fulmars. Days 8-12 Northeast Greenland National Park Sail through and land in some of the most spectacular fjord country in the world along down the coast of Greenland, while exploring rarely visited glaciers, bays and inlets. This is the largest national park in the world, nearly impossible to reach except on expedition ships. Spectacular geology combined with glacial features create steep mountains raising directly from the sea. Look out for picturesque scenery, wildlife and other interesting landing sites in this unspoiled wilderness. Depending on ice, spend these days exploring the massive fjord system of Northeast Greenland National Park, which includes portions of Scoresbysund. These intricate fjord systems are everything from wide and unimaginable to narrow and steeply spectacular with some of the best mountain scenery in the world. Walking over lush stands of colourful autumn tundra may lead to opportunities to see musk oxen grazing nearby. Solar Eclipse Please note on day 12, (August 3, 2026) of your itinerary there will be a solar eclipse to view from the ship's location while in the Kejser Franz Joseph Fjord. The ship will sail into the path of totality (as long as conditions safely allow) and travellers will be able to witness this incredible celestial event from the stark beauty of the Arctic. The eclipse will begin at 4:40pm local time and end at 6:41pm. Solar eclipse viewing glasses will be provided. Ittoqqortoormiit Visit Ittoqqortoormiit for an up close look into life in the most remote town in Greenland. This small settlement is home to only 450 individuals and one grocery store. The people of Ittiqqortoormiit rely heavily on hunting and fishing and have honed these skillsets for many generations. They enjoy spending warmer weather on dog sleds, snowmobile trips, or camping excursions. With the closest inhabited settlement hundreds of miles away across some of the most unforgivable terrain in the world, the warmth and sense of community fostered by the people of Ittiqqortoormiit act as a beacon in the Arctic. Days 13-14 Denmark Strait/Reykjavik Enjoy the lecture series while watching the seas for whales. Head towards Iceland and the steaming hot springs of Reykjavík. The view is often complemented by soaring fulmars, kittiwakes, gannets, guillemots, and razorbills. Day 15 Reykjavik For guests departing on disembarkation day, G Adventures will provide a complimentary transfer at 8:00am to Keflavik International Airport from the port. For guests who are planning on staying in Reykjavik post trip, taxis will be available for hire at the pier to transfer them to their accommodations. EXPEDITION VESSEL: M/S EXPEDITION

Formerly known as Ocean Adventurer, starting the 2025/25 season the vessel is now renamed as the MS Expedition. This is ship that blends comfort and capability in all the right ways. Extensively refurbished, it features upgraded engines, refreshed cabins with ensuite bathrooms, and larger social spaces for a perfect mix of slick performance, creature comforts, and that community feel. And when it’s time to brave the Drake? Its Ice Class 1A technology, upgraded stabilizers, and a modern propulsion system deliver smoother, quieter sailing, and all with a significantly smaller carbon footprint. With just 128 passengers, the vessel enables twice-daily excursions (weather-permitting) — something larger vessels can’t offer. That means more time off ship doing what really matters: being fully immersed in Antarctica’s magic. This highly-experienced expedition ship was originally built in 1975 but with multi-million conversions in 1998 and again in 2017, to ensure that decor and creature comforts are second to none. The ice-strengthed hull and fleet of zodiacs ensure that the vessel is fully prepared for polar exploration.
