Le Commandant Charcot
The hybrid-electric powered Le Commandant Charcot combines icebreaking abilities and luxury to explore polar regions of the world no other conventional ship can venture to.
The luxury icebreaker Le Commandant Charcot is the only passenger ship in the world to have visited both the North Pole and the edge of the Antarctic continent. This very first hybrid-electric polar exploration ship powered by LNG has been designed with the greatest attention to detail in terms of safety and respect for the environment. Explore regions of the world no other conventional ship can venture to, thanks to the extraordinary abilities of the only passenger ship able to navigate through ice-covered waters, whether early or late in the season. Discover unexplored landscapes and scenery: cathedral-sized icebergs and otherwise inaccessible, ice-bound waters with their unique wildlife.
Le Commandant Charcot combines the abilities of a powerful icebreaker with refined surroundings complete with the kind of luxury services never before offered in the farthest reaches of the southern and northern hemispheres. Its indoor swimming pool, conservatory, panoramic restaurant, outdoor restaurant, Main Lounge, Observation Lounge, the lobby… Each of the common areas has been designed to both convey French-style discreet luxury and arouse wonder and amazement. The common thread running through all their designs is the desire to allow the light to penetrate and open everything up the extraordinary polar landscapes and scenery.

A more eco-friendly sailing
Le Commandant Charcot is the very first luxury hybrid electric polar exploration ship powered by liquified natural gas, the epitome of a more responsible and sustainable sailing. Safe and low impact polar navigation is her area of expertise, taking advantage of the latest innovations and even developing new, market-leading technologies and solutions to make her one of the most advanced polar vessels at sea today.
Ice Class like no Other
Le Commandant Charcot is the world's first passenger ship to be fitted with a Polar Class 2 (PC2) hull. This gives it the ability to sail between the sheets of drifting sea ice and reach the most remote and isolated regions, when conditions allow. Protecting the polar ecosystems and the coastal sea ice – a vital habitat for marine wildlife – is our priority. Expertise, innovation, humility before nature, cooperation with local peoples and ensuring a minimal impact on the environment are the fundamental concepts behind responsible exploration.

Learn from the Experts
Biology, history, geology, the study of the ice and the oceans, protecting the environment… Observe and unlock the secrets of the ecosystem during zodiac cruises, from the ship’s decks with your expedition team, and through fascinating talks and lectures. With around twenty naturalist guides per departure, this is one of the best ratios in the world for this type of trip.
Photo Ambassadors
Because photos still remain a fantastic way to bring our best memories to life, take advantage of the onboard presence of Photo Ambassadors on many sailings. Specialists in the polar regions, they will help and advise you about capturing the best moments of your voyage through special workshops and lectures.

Unique exterior
Admire 360°C views of the surrounding scenery along the promenade deck – a possibility rarely found on passenger ships – and take time out for a break on one of the benches heated via energy recuperation.
Surrounded by polar scenery, relax in the waters of the Blue Lagoon, heated to between 27°C and 37°C via energy recuperation.
Gastronomy aboard Le Commandant Charcot
Savour the delights of one of Michelin-starred chef Alain Ducasse’s signature dishes at Nuna (the “Earth” in Inuit) – the only Alain Ducasse gastronomic restaurant at sea – with spectacular snow-covered scenery as your décor. With 235 staff members, 135 suites and no less than three restaurants, this extraordinary 30,000-tonne ship had to create an exceptional food offering. “I really like the idea that passengers will discover distant horizons, the rugged beauty of polar landscapes and so a complete change of scenery – and then for their meals, they will return to the soft atmospheres of these charming and elegant restaurants to enjoy refined French cuisine,” says Alain Ducasse.

This promise is reality aboard Le Commandant Charcot. Each of the three restaurants has its own signature, offering the unique experience of French hospitality. On the terrace, the Inneq bar has an offering that varies daily as well as a permanent menu. Gastronomic restaurant Nuna gives pride of place to natural, healthy and gourmet cuisine from breakfast to dinner. And Sila offers an original and hearty buffet. From the dining experience and service to the wine waiting and atmosphere, everything is in harmony with unforgettable culinary memories.
