An intimate expedition into the Arctic ice!

Overview

On this 9-day small expedition vessel voyage, we depart Longyearbyen to explore the north-west coast of Spitsbergen, the largest of Svalbard’s archipelago. The area is home to an abundance of wildlife and is one of the best places to encounter polar bears in their natural habitat. If conditions permit it may be possible to reach the edge of the sea ice which extends all the way to the North Pole. The area is full of stunning Arctic scenery and is home to some of the largest glaciers in the northern hemisphere.
Day 1: Embarkation day in Longyearbyen, Norway Your journey begins in Longyearbyen situated on the picturesque Adventfjorden. In the afternoon you will embark the expedition vessel and set off exploring. Day 2-8: Exploring the west coast of Spitsbergen As we leave the Adventfjorden you will get your first impressions of the wonderful land-scapes of the area. Our planned route will take us up the Isfjord to Prins Karls Foreland, an island off the coast of Spitsbergen. Here we will plan a shore landing to visit a colony of Walruses. The essence of every expedition is the shore landings. As we explore the coast we will attempt to make shore landings on a daily basis by Zodiac landing craft so you can spend time enjoying the nature from the shore. Short hikes in the wilderness are all part of the adventure. At all times you will be accompanied by a professional guide trained and armed for polar bear protection. Throughout the expedition your expert guide will give lectures onboard on the local environment, wildlife and history to give you a rich understanding of the places you are visiting. As we travel north other sites we may visit include the scientific research settlement of Ny Alesund where Nobile departed by airship in 1928 on his expedition to reach the North Pole. Exploring where ice allows us... We will plan to visit several glaciers if the ice conditions allow. A great example is the Lilliehöökbreen glacier, one of the largest in Svalbard, located 14 km inside the beautiful Lilliehöökfjorden. If possible we will do a Zodiac cruise to get close to this awe-inspiring glacier face. As we travel north we will search the coastline for polar bears which are frequently sight-ed in this area along with other marine and birdlife. Our goal is to travel far enough north to reach the edge of the sea ice which extends all the way to the North Pole. This is only possible in favourable conditions. It is a magical experience and a perfect photography opportunity. Depending on the sea ice conditions in the early summer, it may be possible to visit the abandoned Russian ghost town of Pyramiden and walk in amongst the derelict buildings of the former Soviet Union mining town. If it is not possible another option will be to visit the Russian settle-ment of Barentsburg. Day 9: Return to Longyearbyen The adventure ends back in Longyearbyen where you will depart the vessel in the morn-ing having made new friends and some unforgettable memories. Trip Notes One of the most exciting things is that no journey to Svalbard is ever the same. There is no set itinerary and a flexible approach to exploring, making a journey here a real Arctic adventure. Your expedition leader and captain will work tirelessly with the conditions to ensure you see the most Svalbard has to offer. When travelling in remote regions the expedition leader and captain will make decisions based on the sea, the ice and the weather conditions. This itinerary is an outline of what you’ll experience on this voyage.
