Weddellhavet
En vild region i Antarktis!
Antarktis Weddell Sea upptäcktes av den brittiska sälaren James Weddell 1823. Detta normalt isbundna hav på den östra sidan av den antarktiska halvön är mest känt för den otroliga historien om Shackletons skepp, Endurance, som fastnade och krossades av is 1915. Efter 15 månader på packisen lyckades Shackleton och hans män nå Elephant Island och ordna räddning.
Ingången till denna isiga värld sker ofta via 'Antarctic Sound' - uppkallad efter den svenska upptäcktsresanden Nordenskjölds expeditionsskepp. Ljudet som skiljer spetsen av den antarktiska halvön från Dundee Island kallas också "Iceberg Alley", på grund av de enorma isberg som ofta ses här som kommer ut från Weddellhavet.
