December update from Expeditions Online: The Arctic, Antarctica and a special voyage to the Brazilian Amazon!
Feeling a lot like an Antarctic Christmas!
With several expeditions already under the belt, the 2018/19 Antarctic season is well underway! Of particular note is the success of 14 swimmers (yes that's right, swimmers!) who participated in the inaugural Antarctica Ice Swimming expedition last month. More than just a polar plunge, these brave adventurers swam a 1000 m marked course wearing nothing but speedos... the water temperature was a bracing -1.2C! The fastest home was Petar Stoychev from Bulgaria, returning in an impressive 11 minutes and 8 seconds - all officially timed by the International Ice Swimming Association. This was truly one for the record books - there have been a handful of such individual swims in Antarctica previously, but never before as a group! We are already planning a return trip in 2019.
The current Antarctic season is now all but sold out with almost every single ship at 100% occupancy. However, due to a recent group cancellation, we do have a few cabins left on a wonderful peak-season expedition in February, Weddell Sea Quest. This fantastic itinerary takes in the best of the Antarctic Peninsula both east and west sides, sailing on a small vessel so that everyone gets ashore at the same time. If you are considering a last-minute trip down south, book your place as soon as possible, there is nothing cheaper available than this or any other ship. See more information in this month's featured expedition, as well as a selection of other new and exciting expedition cruises from around the globe.

Spot our first icebergs as we approach the east coast of Greenland near Kap Brewster. There are about 50 bird species on the island such as Gyrfalcon, Snowy Owl, Barnacle and Pink-footed Goose. With the solar maximum ending soon, this may be a last chance for many years to admire the mystical Northern Lights at their very best! This unique voyage starts from $4,050.
6th - 16th February 2019: 11 days
The Weddell Sea resonates with the ill-fated yet heroic expedition of the great British polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton. This voyage explores this remote and ice-bound region in combination with the mountainous western side of the Antarctic Peninsula. Due to a recent cancellation we have a few cabins still available on this peak-season Antarctica cruise on a genuinely SMALL ship - not to be missed! Twin cabins from $8160.
Something different... The Brazilian Amazon!
This is a true expedition voyage and we explore far into the wilderness into some of the most untouched rainforest in all of the Amazon. We venture far up the least inhabited major river in the Amazon Basin on our expedition vessel, the Motor Yacht Tucano. Weaving in and out of small channels on the Rio Negro, we explore areas very rarely visited and seek out the mysterious life of the wilderness that stirs in the forest and in the heart of wild nature. Departures throughout the year from Manaus in the company of just 18 people! From US$3,150
Polar cruises are different to expeditions in many ways, and they may be better suited to you if you’ve always wanted to visit the North or South Pole but aren’t interested in the challenges and rigors of a full expedition.
